Melomakarona (Greek honey cookies)

These are a favorite Greek holiday cookie of ours, and traditionally made for New Years. Yiayia obviously set the Standard high, but this Christmas we decided to try our hand at them for the first time. The result was met with rave reviews from the ultimate – and most brutally honest – taste tester, Achilles. Melomakarona are nutty, sweet deliciousness, and actually quite light since the cookie itself doesn’t contain much sugar. Don’t worry, the cookie’s then dipped in a honey syrup – don’t think we’d leave you out to dry like that.

Ingredients
4 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 cups olive oil
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup orange juice
1/4 cup cognac
3/4 tsp cinnamon
3/4 tsp ground cloves
pinch of salt
1/4 lb walnuts, chopped
1 tsp cinnamon

Syrup
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup honey
1/2 cup water
Juice of 1/2 lemon + zest
5 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick

Steps
In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda & baking powder
In a large bowl, mix oil and sugar, add juice, cognac, cinnamon, salt and cloves and mix until smooth
Gradually add in the flour mixture and mix with your hands (get em dirty!) until a medium soft dough forms (Greek recipes are very specific like that…)
Cover dough with a dish towel and set aside for 25 mins
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
In a small bowl combine chopped walnuts and remaining cinnamon
Shape dough in to small 2 inch ovals, flatten and spoon 1/4 tsp on the walnut/cinnamon mixture in the center

Fold the edges of the dough over the walnut mixture and press the edges to seal

Arrange on an ungreased pan and bake until lightly golden, 20 mins

While the cookies cool, get to work on the good stuff, the honey syrup
In a medium pan, combine all the syrup ingredients and bring to a boil for 5 mins
Skim off the froth, spoon out the cinnamon stick and cloves
With a slotted spoon, gently dip each cookie into the hot syrup for 20 secs

Sprinkle with walnut/cinnamon mixture (we added ground hazelnuts as well)

Place each cookie into a cupcake holder

Serve and celebrate the new year!
